Biographies

Wayne Ruga has devoted his career to creating and supporting the development of environments that inspire the human potential. Dr. Ruga is an internationally acclaimed architect, visionary, and scholar: as a healthcare architect, he has designed projects around the world; as a visionary, he has changed the face of the healthcare environment by having founded the annual Symposium on Healthcare Design in 1985 (now called the Healthcare Facilities Symposium) and The Center for Health Design in 1993; and as a scholar, he has produced and published original research that has revolutionized the design of the healthcare environment throughout the world.

Dr. Ruga is a highly sought after public speaker and has given scores of featured lectures at major universities and professional meetings worldwide. As a prolific author, he has had dozens of articles published, has had his work recognized in books written by numerous peers, and has been featured in more than 50 professional, trade, and consumer publications. As an academic leader, Dr. Ruga has worked with two universities to develop specialized graduate programs in healthcare design, in addition to serving as a professor of management within a highly innovative program for corporate CEO’s that he developed.

In 1999, Dr. Ruga founded The CARITAS Project as a non-profit organization for the purpose of pioneering the next generation of improvements in health and healthcare delivery with design of the environment. As its president, Dr. Ruga has launched a series of ‘projects’ that have included: an invitational leadership summit; an innovative conference that engaged 100 design professionals with 2500 local citizens; a long-term international research project; a ‘collaborative conversation’ for long-term care professionals; a study tour to China sponsored by the People to People Citizen Ambassador Program; and a ‘community inquiry’ process for improving the health of local citizens.

Tama Duffy Day is the Perkins + Will National Interior Design Healthcare Practice Leader, formulating research and design initiatives throughout the firm’s 20 offices. Ms. Day was a Principal in the Perkins + Will New York office for 10 years before relocating to Washington, DC. In her 27 years of experience, she has lead multi-phased, large complex projects throughout the United States. She is a leader in the Perkins + Will ‘Excellence in Design Initiative’.

A well-published expert, she lectures extensively on healing design and evidence-based design outcomes. In 1995, she helped launch a healthcare continuing education program with the New York University Real Estate Division and taught extensively throughout a five-year span. She currently is Adjunct Faculty at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, DC.  

Annette Ridenour is founder and president of Aesthetics, Inc., a multidisciplinary design firm specializing in the healthcare built environment. Through an integrated approach utilizing architecture, interior design, graphic design and the arts, Aesthetics has created healing experiences for over 25 years. She is a founding partner of Aesthetic Audio Systems, Inc., providing prescriptive music programs for public and patient spaces in healthcare institutions.

Annette is nationally recognized for her leadership in the healthcare design field. She is president emeritus of the Society for the Arts in Healthcare, former advisory council member of the National Symposium on Healthcare Design, past advisor to the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, faculty member of the Program for Integrated Medicine at the Kaiser Institute in Brighton, Colorado, and curator of arts and healing projects. She has authored numerous journal and magazine articles and is a popular speaker on topics related to healthcare design and the role of arts in healing.
